The Calculation

The calculator starts with your EV's nominal ranrange (typically merange (typicallrange (typically measured at 70°F/21°C) and applies temperature-specific efficiency factors. It considers both battery performance losses and the additional energy needed for cabin and battery heating or cooling. For example, a vehicle with a 250-mile nominal range might see a 30-40% reduction at 0°F (-18°C).

Key Variables

The key variables include outside temperature, batbattery capacity, nbattery cbattery capacitbattery capacity, nominal ranrange, climate contrange, climate range, climate control usage, and whether you use preconditioning while plugged in. Temperature is the most influential factor, with range dropping significantly at extremes. Using climate control (especially heating) can further reduce range by 10-25% depending on settings.

Assumptions

We base our calculations on typical lithium-ion battery performance curves and real-world EV testing data. The calculator assumes properly maintained tire pressure and normal driving conditions.
